Frequently Asked Questions:
The Legacy Challenge is a way for you to increase your impact now and in the future – all without spending a dollar in your lifetime. All you have to do is name Cascade PBS in your Will, trust, or as beneficiary of another financial account. Once you notify us of your intention, you will unlock a $1,000 matching gift for Cascade PBS today.
Is it free to join the Legacy Challenge?
Yes. There’s no cost to you in your lifetime – all you have to do is name Cascade PBS as a beneficiary of your Will, trust, or as beneficiary of another financial account and $1,000 matching donation will be initiated today thanks to our board of directors and some loyal donors!
Is there a cap on these matching funds?
The Legacy Challenge has an upper limit of $70,000: The first 70 new or increased planned giving intentions received will be matched with a $1,000 gift today.
Is there a deadline to join the Legacy Challenge?
Yes. The matching gifts made available through Cascade PBS Legacy Challenge are only available until December 31, 2025 or until matching funds run out. Don’t miss the opportunity to have a cash gift made in your name to help these kids today!
Who provided the challenge funds to match my donation?
The Legacy Challenge has been made possible by the generosity of the Cascade PBS board of directors and a small group of dedicated donors to Cascade PBS who wish to remain anonymous.
I named Cascade PBS in my will years ago. Is my gift still eligible for the match?
Yes, probably. If you’ve already included a legacy gift to Cascade PBS in your plans, but never informed the us, then your gift is eligible for matching funds!
Matching funds are limited, so they cannot be applied to legacy gifts that you’ve already informed us of prior to 2024. However, if you have decided to increase the value of your estate gift you are eligible for the match! Likewise, if you previously told us about a gift you’ve included in your will, but the Legacy Challenge inspires you to include a Cascade PBS as a beneficiary of your IRA or other financial account as well, the newly promised gift is eligible for the match.
Your situation is uniquely yours, and we’d love to speak with you more. Contact us at (206) 443-6703 or LegacyTeam@CascadePBS.org about your situation and your philanthropic goals. By working together, it’s likely that we can find a way for you to trigger an immediate cash donation with the Legacy Challenge today too!
I’ve already named Cascade PBS in my estate plans, but don’t feel comfortable disclosing the amount of my legacy gift. Can I still join the Legacy Challenge?
Yes! If you’d prefer to keep the current value of your legacy gift private, you can still join the Legacy Challenge. Your future legacy gift will still qualify for an immediate match donation of $1,000. Just let us know about your gift intention and complete the Legacy Circle Intention form (but leave the section about gift amount blank).
How do I name Cascade PBS in my will or trust?
The most common way to name a charity in your estate plan is to include a provision in your will or trust. If you don’t currently have either, you’ll need to contact an attorney to draw up the papers. We suggest providing your attorney with the following language:
A General Bequest of a stated sum of money may be worded:
"I give to Cascade Public Media, a Washington nonprofit corporation, or its successor [insert here the exact dollar amount]."
A Specific Bequest of a certain asset from your estate may be worded:
"I give to Cascade Public Media, a Washington nonprofit corporation, or its successor [insert here a description of the particular property]."
A Residuary Bequest, after other bequests and expenses have been paid, may be worded:
"I give to Cascade Public Media, a Washington nonprofit corporation, or its successor all [or a portion] of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate."
How do I name Cascade PBS as a beneficiary of my retirement, bank, or brokerage account?
This can often be the easiest way to make an extraordinary gift, because naming a charitable beneficiary only involves a single form for you to fill out, but your impact can be substantial.
To name Cascade PBS as a beneficiary of one or more of your financial accounts, simply request a “beneficiary designation form” from your plan administrator (there’s no need to consult an attorney, all you need is a legal name and Tax ID number). You may also be able to update your beneficiaries by logging into your account online.
Use the following information to update your beneficiaries:
Cascade Public Media is the legal name for Cascade PBS.
Tax ID Number: 91-1221895
Mailing Address: 316 Broadway, Seattle, WA 98122
Do I have to make a legally binding pledge to join the Legacy Challenge?
Like any ordinary bequest, your gift plans can be revised at any time should your circumstances change. This is part of the reason that legacy gifts are such a good fit for so many people.
Why are you asking for bequest commitments now?
The task of putting your final affairs in order can feel daunting. Sometimes people wait until it’s too late, which may leave loved ones with difficult decisions and an expensive probate process.
A current estate plan which reflects your values is important for everyone. And the good news is that creating an estate plan is easier, and much less daunting, than you might think. Like anything else – the hardest part is just getting started.
We hope the Legacy Challenge provides an incentive for you to update your existing estate plan, or to put something into place for the very first time.
I still have more questions. Who should I contact?
