As the November election approaches, Seattle politicians are leaning into podcast and social media video content to reach younger voters.

In this year’s election cycle, there’s an uptick in campaigns, like those of Seattle City Council candidates and mayoral candidate Katie Wilson, that are turning to nontraditional media like short-form videos and interviews with podcasters and influencers.

Mayor Bruce Harrell’s campaign is also increasingly leaning into social media and doing more talk-radio interviews.

A local political consultant says the new approach to campaigning has been a growing trend for several years, but this year it’s accelerated, largely due to the breakout success of New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.

His unique approach has offered a blueprint to progressives across the country and in Seattle.

“Especially as the media landscape gets more fragmented, I think it makes sense that we’re going to see more candidates just try to find new ways to reach audiences. ’Cause people are just in all sorts of places now, and it’s gotten a lot harder, really, to reach people,” said Cascade PBS and KNKX reporter Nate Sanford.
