A bill that bans all cellphone use while driving, not just texting (except for a few hands-free uses) was passed in the Washington State Senate yesterday, as reported by the Seattle Times. A previous law was passed in 2007 that only banned texting while driving. However, technology and the functions of a smartphone have evolved considerably since then.

Drivers will still be able to make calls and use GPS as long as it is hands-free. Violations for any other uses would be $124 for a first-time offense, and $209 for any violation thereafter. Drivers, take note! Unlike before, all future infractions under this new legislation will appear on your record.
