Seattle Mayor Ed Murray and the City Council have decided to confront Shell's plan to use the Port of Seattle as home base for their Arctic drilling fleet. As reported by the Stranger, Murray asked the Seattle Department of Planning and Development to "conduct a thorough review of the Terminal 5 proposal" from the Port of Seattle so that all environmental and economic impacts of the lease are "sufficiently disclosed" to the public.
Mayor Murray and the City Council, by coming together in a rare moment, are sending a clear message to the Port of Seattle that economic profit cannot always win when making important decisions without thorough environmental review. It would be quite ironic if "green" Seattle were to be home to Shell's drilling rigs, especially because of the environmental devastation drilling in the Arctic is said to have on the planet.
