Like the majority of homeless youth, Alex and Ryan were kicked out of their homes because of some conflict with their parents. Ryan's felt he wasn’t working hard enough, and doing well enough in school; Alex was reluctant to offer any details, saying only that a “series of unfortunate events” between him and his Eastside family left him without a roof over his head.
Now, Alex and Ryan struggle to find shelter, food, jobs and purpose. They both spent a night last week at ROOTs, a homeless youth shelter in the University District, which is where we met up with them. They agreed to speak with Crosscut as a part of our “Voices From the Street” series, talking about their challenges, fears and appreciation of Seattle.
