Save the Date: Crosscut's 2nd Annual Courage Awards

Courage isn't something we take for granted. That's why, for the second year in a row, we're recognizing Northwest individuals who have it in spades.

Courage isn't something we take for granted. That's why, for the second year in a row, we're recognizing Northwest individuals who have it in spades.

Courage was on display once again in the Northwest this year. To find evidence of it, look no further than Oso or Pateros. And this October, for the second year in a row, Crosscut will honor that courage. We invite you to join us.

Please mark your calendars for Crosscut’s second annual Courage Awards. This year’s festivities will take place on October 23, 7-9 a.m. at Seattle’s Bell Harbor International Conference Center (Pier 66 on Alaskan Way).

We’re thrilled to announce that Jean Enersen, acclaimed local news anchor, will deliver this year’s keynote address. Jean recently stepped down from her KING-TV anchor duties after 42 years behind the desk and her trailblazing career is a study in firsts: first female local TV news anchor in the country; first to anchor a news program in the Soviet Union; first to travel to Africa with Bill and Melinda Gates; first local TV reporter in China. Has she got stories.

We’re equally excited that acclaimed local artist Ann Gardner is donating her time to design the Courage awards themselves this year. You know those elegant glass pods suspended from the ceiling in the Convention Center atrium? Those are hers.

In the next few weeks, Crosscut editors will huddle with our citizen’s advisory panel to compile an initial list of Courage Award nominees. We’ll share that list online, then ask all of you to send in your suggestions for outstanding courage in Business, in Arts and Culture, in Public Service and, for the first time, the David Brewster Lifetime Achievement Award.

We'll use four criteria to vet nominees and select the winners:

  • Did they exercise leadership for the greater good?
  • Did they innovate despite challenges?
  • Did they go against the grain? Did they trailblaze?
  • Did they take a personal risk?

So start thinking. And remember: We have limited space available at this year’s Courage Awards breakfast, so please reserve your ticket or table now.
