Swedish Medical Center Foundation's big annual run, which occurs the last Sunday of July (July 25), is in its 16th year of helping research to combat deadly ovarian cancer. The Swedish SummeRun raises money for the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research.
Day of race registration begins at 6:30 a.m. If you've been training, the 10k run begins at 8 a.m. For everyone else, the 5k run and walk event begins at 8:20 a.m.
The research center was founded in memory of Marsha Rivkin, who died of ovarian cancer just short of her 50th birthday, by her husband, Dr. Saul Rivkin, M.D. He remains a passionate, hands-on promoter of the SummerRun event (conceived by one of the couple's four daughters in memory of their mother); he's legendary for ubiquitous presence at other running events where he personally hands out brochures promoting the run.
If you go: 8 a.m., Sunday, July 25. Day of race registration is from 6:30 to 8 a.m.; cost is $30 (cash, check, or credit card). Register at the corner of Marion Street and Minor Avenue near the medical center.
