Todd Horton’s drawing devices reveal the dreams of trees

Brangien Davis delves into the Skagit Valley artist’s inventive techniques for using wind, water and woods to capture nature on canvas.

Brangien Davis meets Edison, Washington, artist Todd Horton to explore his latest project, “Topographia Index,” in which he pushes the boundaries of traditional art by collaborating with nature itself. Using analog wire systems, Horton suspends writing implements from tree branches, allowing the wind and weather to create unusual and dynamic artworks. We get an up-close look at how he co-creates with a local river, utilizing tubes and tides to craft a work with the water. Horton is deeply influenced by his love for the land, wildlife and nature writers, and Brangien takes a deep dive into the work that he believes is capturing the essence of trees and rivers.
