Progressive challenger Rinck beat incumbent Councilmember Tanya Woo for the Position 8 seat by nearly 12%, but will her lead hold in the general?

With 103,933 votes counted, progressive challenger Rinck has netted 46.8% of the vote and incumbent Councilmember Woo has 41.6%.

Tanya Woo, Alexis Mercedes Rinck, Saunatina Sanchez and Tariq Yusuf are vying to finish the final 13 months of the citywide Position 8 term.

The levy would fund about 30% of SDOT’s budget and supports road paving, bridge repair, sidewalk construction, bike lanes and more.

The measure proposes a 5% “excess compensation” tax on companies for each employee with a salary over $1M to help fund permanently subsidized housing.

Tariq Yusuf, Alexis Mercedes Rinck and Saunatina Sanchez have all entered the race for Seattle’s 2024 special election.

A coalition is asking to increase the levy to $1.9B for more bike and pedestrian safety measures — which a poll found a majority of voters might support. 

Supporters are aiming for a November ballot initiative to fund mixed-income, subsidized housing by taxing companies that pay higher than $1M salaries.

Woo initially ran for the District 2 seat, backed by Chinatown-International District leaders and big businesses.

The Council has until Jan. 23 to fill the opening left by Teresa Mosqueda. The chosen member will serve until voters elect a replacement in November.
