Gus Garcia was Austin's first Latino mayor, but he was contributing to the community well before holding that office. He served as a member of the city's Human Relations Commission in the 70's, and served on the AISD School Board. He loved Austin, and at a memorial service for him at city hall, Austin got to show that love in return.
